Time keeps on slipping

Well, yes here I am everybody!  I have "finally" shown my face again after what seems like an eternity. Time just seems to keep slipping by...honestly. This week has just been absolutely jam packed with teaching english, a meeting to organise charity work, having the kids home for a teacher's only day, being stuck in a traffic jam, ladies coffee morning, conference call with business partners, waiting around for the housekeeper to do 3 no shows in a row, being stuck in a traffic jam again, finally setting up our Indian bank account with "HRH", waiting around for plumbers that never showed up, being stuck in traffic again, attempting in vain to work off my oversized butt at the gym, getting covers made for the boys rooms, booking our "Diwali" holiday to Oman, being stuck in traffic again, lunch out with the girls,  interviewing our new housekeeper, did I say being stuck in traffic? Haha all of you from Mumbai are feeling my pain right now.

Bungalow 9
So that's what my week has entailed thus far... it's been eventful to say the least. I'll tell you one thing though- the 2 cosmopolitans that I downed at lunch today felt well deserved. A couple of the girls and I went to Bungalow 9 near Lilavati hospital and had a fab (non-stop...but like literally not even to take a breath) gossip session with a few drinks and scrummy food thrown into the mix. It was my first time to Bungalow 9 and I was pretty impressed I have to say. Has a great sort of havana club feel and the food was damn good too. Definetly gets a big "Queenie's thumbs up."
Resort in Oman
You know I just can't believe how the days pass so quickly in Mumbai. I swear the weekend feels just like yesterday. How the hell did that happen? So much has happened and there's so much to tell. I just don't know if I can actually manage getting into it all. So let's just say the week has been fab, slowly getting there with the apartment, our gorgeous feline friends have finally been given clearance and their flights are booked for the 1st of November, what else? Ohhhh yes had been trying to be good for so long but "HRH" finally caved in and booked us 6 nights in Oman for the Diwali break (thanks Conde Nast Mag for the inspiration of course) and we have a night out with a group of friends this saturday in town. Woohoo. (Hmmmm what to wear?) Stilettos of course...
So all in all it's been a very productive week. The apartment whilst not HUGE (like some of those damn penthouse apartments with pools I've seen...she says through gritted teeth) is starting to feel more like home. Teaching english to the little children is going really well...which reminds me I have to organise the next lesson with my friend. Better get onto that. The kids LOVED the big read aloud books I took in this week -so will definetly get some more for next week. Yes, make mental note to self: things to do tomorrow. Sh#t is it friday already tomorrow?
Ok anyway...1. Get kids to school. 2. MUST HIT THE GYM EVEN IF JUST FOR 15 MINS anything is better than nothing right? 3. Get more read aloud books. 4. Shopping trip and coffee with girlfriend for her b'day. (Need to pick up some hand made chocolates for her beforehand too. (DONT FORGET QUEENIE) 5. Manicure. 6. Check hairy leg situation. 7. Drop Prince M to his friends for a sleepover. 8. Get into sexy lingerie and vamp it up with the hubby...hahaha. Gotcha ahhhhh.....no sadly number 8 is going to go more like: collapse on the sofa with hubby AND all important G&T in hand -me thinks. Lets be honest I don't even think the stray dog down the road would want to vamp it up with me after a long hot day in Mumbai. Trust me. Especially not after a rogan josh and a few cheese naans...I wouldn't inflict that upon poor old "HRH" or anyone for that matter. But for now a nice chilled Australian chardonnay is hitting the spot rather nicely thanks very much.
Yeah...it's just not a pretty picture.
Big warm welcome to everyone from the Netherlands, Israel, Thailand and Russia. Thanks for tuning in even when it seemed like I had abandoned ship!

Happy b'day Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi
Happy Gandhi Jayanti everyone...let's celebrate the birthday of a truly extraordinary man who was known as Mahatma Gandhi to so many people. Well he really did teach us a thing or two didn't he?
Many political leaders and especially civil rights and anti apartheid leaders have used Gandhi's non violence teachings as inspiration. Some quotes from some of these leaders include:

"Gandhiji influenced the activities of liberation movements and civil rights movements in all 5 continents of the world!" Nelson Mandela at Gandhi memorial unveiling 1993

"Christ gave us the goals and Mahatma Gandhi the tactics- bless his soul." Martin Luther King 1955

"I am mindful that I might not be standing before you today as president of the United States had it not been for Gandhi and the message he shared with America and the world." Barack Obama 2010

Martin Luther King
Nelson Mandela

Gandhi may be dead, but his message still remains as relevant as it was more than 60 years ago when the people of India were being oppressed by the tyrannical British Empire. What a man. He was imprisoned unjustly for more than 6 years of his life and yet he himself accepted this as part of his journey. I can not even begin to imagine what it must have been like to be so courageous and self giving. To be willing to die...seriously lose your OWN life for the plight of your people. Just think about that for a while. Would you have done it? I can personally say that my own fear would have stood in the way...

Anyhow thank you Mahatma Gandhi you have changed the world that I have brought my children into...by your own work and by inspiring others like Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King. The world has at least made a start to becoming a more just place for us all to live. I say made a start because I know that there is still so much more to do in this world to stand up for equality. So we live in hope of one day continuing your work. And doing it and yourself justice...

GONE BUT CERTAINLY NOT FORGOTTEN

Sooo Rockstar

OMG I sooo can't wait for "Rockstar" to come out at the cinema. For starters Ranbir Kapoor plays alongside that ridiculously gorgeous newcomer Nargis Fakhri. She is just drop dead gorgeous. And when she's on the screen you just can't take your eyes of her. Damn it. I think it's actually true that some of the most beautiful girls in the world are Indian.
The movie traces the life of a musician with a few bumps in his career along the way thrown in for good measure. And another plus for me is that A.R Rahman composed the music for "Rockstar" so it should definetly be a goodie. I might get some of the girls together and go see it. "HRH" won't be keen as there won't be sub titles. Hmmmm. Oh well it won't hurt him to miss out on seeing this on screen beauty. It's O.T.T and I don't think he could cope ;-)

My little wish list this week...

Finest Seven Sunglasses
McQueen Clutch
Okay so here are the latest things on my wish list. (Well for this week anyhow!)  Just in case you all thought I'd gone spiritual or become a hare krishna devotee or somethin'- the superficial materialistic cow part of "moi" jumps out of her cave and hits you with her rythym stick ;-)
So here's a few selfish fashion desires that I still have bubbling within me:
1. A pair of "Finest Seven Sunglasses" these sunnies are very exclusive (stockists include Harvey Nick's of course darling) and made with seven of the finest elements in mind. Just look at the drool worthy hand stitched Spanish leather case. I want, I need, I absolutely must have...
2. The almond python leather knuckle box clutch by yes you guessed it...Alexander McQueen.
Cavalli Cuff
Muja babe inspired kurta
3. Tangerine elongated kurta by Hermes Fall 2011 collection. But yes I'm suspecting the only way to look good in it would be to be 6 foot 4" and a healthy size zero so I'll just park this item in the "wish list forever and ever item" exaggerated sigh.
4. Roberto Cavalli feather design cuff. Everyone needs a little Cavalli on them to spice things up. I just love his flamboyance. And wouldn't mind a ride on his boat either- while we're at it!

Channeling father christmas right now...or a trip to London, Paris or Milan.

Go on...hate me for it. I'm pouring myself a drink.

We'll always have Paris

Paris we are not...
I heart Mumbai and ya know what I'm not afraid to say it! Ok so sure it's not Sydney, London or New York. But that's why I'm here...to be in Mumbai. To feel at home in my ancestral homeland and allow my wee ones the opportunity to get to know this place intimately. To be able to call India home. And for all the compromises we have to make (yeah ok there are a few...) I still believe it's worth it. I'm a little over hearing some (and admittedly they are few) expats or NRI's (non resident Indian's to you not in the loop) moan on about the small little things that aren't perfect about this place. Look here's my point- we all made the decision to live here...you knew it wasn't Paris when you moved here, so seriously give it a BREAK already. Live in the present and accept what you have right in front of you cos it might actually surprise you! Make the most of what we actually "do" have as opposed to what we don't and you never know- it might really do you some good to learn to live without all those material items. That's my little rant over and done with for the day!
Sorry. Hate doing that...but sometimes you just gotta say what ya gotta say. If you go into something wanting to enjoy it I believe you will. And you know what? I sure as hell do want to enjoy myself in Mumbai. So I'll scream it from the rooftops...."I LOVE MUMBAI". Suck on that all you haters!
Thanks for all the new readers from all over like Finland, Norway, Mexico, Pakistan, Dubai, Singapore and Thailand. And as for you all in India...keep it up it's phenomenal!

On my ipod now...

I love this song. Actually bumped into this little Bollywood shorty (Saif) the other day. He was carrying his guitar...he must play. Interesting. And as for Deepika how cute is she? Jealous...how come she doesn't get break outs with this bloody humidity and where may I ask does she hide all her cheese naans? In her handbag? Just asking...

Fancy the Fendi?

"Morning Kids"
Good morning everyone. I just dropped the tiddly winks off to school and watched them run through the security check (ok the AK 47's attached to the smiling security men taint the pretty picture but hey) they were laughing and happy to be there. As a mother this is one of the best feelings in the world. All you want is for your kids to be happy and mine sure are. I was thinking how familiar everything was beginning to feel as I drove back into Bandra West half an hour later. The sun was shining, the new Sea Link bridge was glistening and if I kept the windows up (not letting in the odd fetid farm yard smell) it all seemed pretty normal. Ahhh Mumbai. This is my home now.
Looks like you're stuck with me
Yesterday I waited for my housekeeper to show up for her first day on the job. Of course being the psychopathic obsessive compulsive that I am- (the western world has contributed to this condition I assure you) the house was sparkling waiting for her arrival. After half an hour I decided to ring wondering if she was caught in traffic. When I got through to her she was very apologetic and said she had been trying to ring "HRH"s phone (who has now taken to ignoring unknown numbers as they are just spam calls...WTF? Yes they ring your number and then play a pre recorded advert to you over the phone!!!) all weekend and then even came over on the saturday (when we were out at the movies with the munchkins) to try to speak to me. She said it is not possible to start work as "my husband has gone crazy and must got to GOA"... I just about dropped the phone in shock. Did I hear correctly? Hubby crazy? Oh God who is this lady? She said she can start at the beginning of the month because "he will not be crazy in the new month of October...." My heart sank...okay she's a nut job, he's a nut job...good god. Okay so lets skip the next 45 minutes of discussion between the two of us and explain everything. Unfortunately her husband has had his only sister pass away in GOA unexpectedly and as you can imagine he is beside himself (this in her description was the "going crazy" part) they need to go down to GOA for the funeral and after one week will be back. Aha, so it was starting to sound a little more logical. She was very apologetic and then said she could leave the family there in GOA and come back early if I wanted? I mean c'mon what kind of a selfish cow does she think I am? Would anyone really even consider asking someone to do that? Not me. So- to cut a long story short she will start on saturday after they get back. I know she isn't lying or pulling my leg because she worked for another expat family who assure me she was honest, reliable and very trust worthy during the TWO years she was with them. And in my books that's enough.
Said offending luxury item
So after sorting that all out, it was time to head off to teach english for the first time through the Mumbai Mobile Creche in the south. The kids are all pretty impoverished and some have never had a proper home EVER in their lives. I was really nervous about getting upset in front of the little ones since I've been prone to breaking down in tears as of late. I stupidly got dressed in a lovely outfit and caught myself holding up the fendi to see if the bag complemented my "look du jour". A wash of shame over came me. Queenie seriously? Think about it love. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING? I made myself a very strong bloody mary and ripped off the entire outfit. What was I thinking? I don't bloody know. So I got some sports gear on (no not the Stella McCartney gears before you all ask!) and grabbed a bottle of water and an apple throwing it in a shopping bag and walked out the door.
Two and half hours later I was a changed woman...seriously I just don't think I look at the world with the same eyes anymore. My heart felt exhausted as every ounce of love had been squeezed out and distributed to each and every child I met. It was overwhelmingly heart breaking at times along with a sense of uplifting hope and pride....yes pride. I felt so proud of them. And I now think of them as little angels. I will be there every monday for them come rain or bloody shine. Wild horses couldn't keep me away.
I keep seeing their little faces in my head...all day long. Their smiles and their looks of determination as they learn't to hold pencils for the first time or pronounce the letter T just melted my heart. Like a slice of cheap (and probably fake) mozzarella cheese under the grill- I melted instantly.
I love asian candles...I swear.
Anyway the big thing to learn is to live with all this and realise it is one part of your existence. You have to have enough juice to give to your own kids, the orphans you teach on a thursday, your yoga instructor, the girls, the hubby and let's not forget yourself. As I'm a newbie I still feel a little all consumed right now. Which if I continue on like this I could very easily just burn out. (Like a cheap asian candle at Chinese New Year- is that ok to say? Probably not- oh I take it back then... I love asians- I mean that schezuan chicken the other night was a life saviour- look, just shut up Queenie the hole is getting bigger...) I'm just going to have to learn to flow seemlessly from my life to theirs. Let's attempt that next step in October huh? It's all a bit much for me right now. She says as she slugs down another pre lunch bloody Mary whilst slinging her fendi handbag over her shoulder. I mean one can only be all giving and "holier than tho" for a wee while. Then the game is up...
I'm off to lunch at the Trident hotel with another 50 expat ladies (lord help me- hence pre lunch bloody mary) I may have to drown myself in my lunch (and all inclusive drinks) and plus there's a raffle. I'm all in to win that facial ya know. Wink wink. Now where's my damn handbag.

Speedy Singhs

Yay I can actually go to a movie and UNDERSTAND it!!! I've found this movie "Speedy Singh's" and it's a Canadian Indian production in English! Yippee. I mean it does look pretty cheesey (of course) and what is up with Rob Lowe, Akshay Kumar and Ludacris rapping in that video clip...??? (WTF)
I also think it has that stunning actress Camilla Belle in  it... Well let's see if I enjoy it. Hope so. Hope so. As long as I have a good laugh. And if that video clip is anything to go by then my chances are good! Hmmm although this could just be "East is East" meets "Mighty Ducks"... LOL
